As the sun began to set, he, who rules over the great and prosperous Britain, enters the room with a feeble gait. Still robust in power, yet sickly in body and mind, King Lear cautiously plants himself onto his throne as he prepares to make his grand announcement. “In order to enjoy my old age and be at rest, I have decided to divide my kingdom into three parts. These lands will be granted to my three lovely daughters! Now, I shall confer the largest portion to the daughter that loves me most, speak!” Lear, who had become accustomed to flattery from the two scheming older daughters, Goneril and Regan , was baffled and frustrated at the honest response of his youngest, Cordelia. “ It is difficult for me to profess... Lear, eager to show his power as someone with a higher status, belittles Cordelia, in hopes of dissuading France and Burgundy’s decision on marrying his youngest daughter. “The price of this filthy “thing” has fallen, she is now only a big flaw, whom I know longer love.” Convinced by Lear’s words, Burgundy, who develops sentiment only towards extravagance and royalty, was quick to disband any connections with Cordelia. Conversely, France adored Cordelia’s honesty and decides to take her as his queen. Relieved that Cordelia is no longer his responsibility, Lear releases Cordelia without giving her his blessings. Finished with the affairs, Lear and his attendants exit the room, leaving only Goneril and Regan. Realizing that they now have complete power, they begin to plot a scheme to reduce their father’s remaining influence over
