King Louis XVI Assignment G. Davis March 19, 2018 Louis Auguste de France was born at the Palace of Versailles in August of 1754. His childhood was one of privilege, befitting a possible future King of France. His education was varied and his knowledge of history, Latin, the stars, and religion was to only part of his education... He was in good health and enjoyed sports and locksmithing which became a passion that lasted his entire life. Although he was surrounded by servants and teachers, his relationship with his parents was limited. They paid more attention to his older brother that was been groomed to become King. Although they had four children and the marriage lasted until they both were killed in the French Revolution, they lived separate lives for the most part. When Louis Auguste was twenty years old his grandfather died and he became Louis XVI, King of France. Louis wanted to be a great King; but his spending habits had left him with serious debt. His “court” was filled with serious intrigue and scandal. Louis never had the strength or desire to control or improve the lives of the French people. For many years he kept busy with the expansion of Versailles. He did everything he could not to deal with the third estate (the serfs and bourgeoisie) by hunting and locksmithing. After years of not paying attention to his people, the people took matters into their own hands and started a revolution to overthrow the crown. You could say that if Louis had been a better, caring King the revolution would not have happened at all.
