Joey Perez Mrs. Yasmin English II H 25 April 2016 The Life of Nero In the entire span of the Roman Empire’s history, Nero will always be infamous for his tyrannical and lavish reign. Born in 37 A.D., he was the successor to Claudius and was given the throne at age 17. Nero was infamous for his actions that have caused controversy and conspiracy. Nero’s life was defined by his unique path to power, his interesting reign, and the controversies about the Great Roman Fire that led to his downfall. Nero’s rise to power was one of the most unique scenarios in Roman history because it was greatly affected by his mother Agrippina.Originally named Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, Nero was the son of Gnaeus and Agrippina. Nero was educated by the philosopher Seneca and was taught philosophy and rhetoric. Agrippina married the Emperor Claudius, after the death of Nero’s Father, and persuaded him to give Nero the chance to the throne. He was educated At the age of 17, Nero was named the Emperor of Rome after the Claudius died in 54 A.D. Nero’s aggressive attitude began once he came to power; Britannicus, Claudius’ son, was allegedly killed by Nero after the idea of him possibly taking the role of Emperor. Nero had eliminated capital punishment, lowered taxes, and gave slaves some rights. He was known to give himself fully in his passions for the arts and athletics. He was a performer of the lyre and in athlete as a charioteer. He was known to be a meddling ruler but still a good-natured one who meant no harm. That all changed once his little self-indulgences became more of tyrannical decisions. He spent vast amounts of money in his artistic passions, of which Rome could not afford to spend on.
