Theme sheet When a person is determined to figure out a Rubik’s Cube, he or she has one trait in common to a scientist who experiments with black holes. They both will never back down on what they are doing, as they perceive that while being alive, anything will be possible. In the well-written novel, King’s Shadow by Elizabeth Alder, the point that the author tries to portray is to never abandon hope. Throughout the entire storyline, there are several different characters with actions that prove the leading focus that Elizabeth is trying to create. One of the characters is named Evyn, and his life changes negatively in a twist of fate. But that does not stop him as long as he never gives up. It is meant to teach Evyn that he can be healed with an herb called “sage”, but there can be a secret, deeper, meaning that the author was trying to reveal to us, and it ties in with hope. “‘Why should a man die while sage is growing in his garden’”(King’s Shadow, 62)? In other words, this saying could be interpreted as, “Why should a man give up while there can be hope”? The author was trying to tell us that Evyn, or anyone else, should never back down on themselves. That is why I picked a sage with arrows pointing in every direction away from it. Sage can heal a person’s weak muscle, and for that reason, sage will furthermore give a man hope. Being that there can be confidence, he or she will realize that their life has meaning, so they will never give up. And when there is a belief, they must follow it. One must not give up, so they will progress over the obstacle that is blocking the goal. They are able to escape under it, or maneuver around it left or right. These are the arrows pointing up, down, left, and right. You must follow that hope of never giving up all the way to North, South, East, and West. And finally, you will reach the destiny you have been looking
