“Kissing signs on the interstate” is an example of imagery. It paints the picture of him and his friends going on car rides through his hometown, creating a nostalgia that was fleeting yet impressionable, like a kiss. This also shows how much these drives meant to him, using “kiss” to describe the way he drove as a way to make it sound more intimate.

“Springtime is when the air is thin” uses allusion to describe the tension in the air. Spring is usually the time where most colleges announce acceptance, rejection, and waitlists. For Conan and many others, it’s an extremely stressful time and as if they can hardly breathe. Spring is when the air is full of tension for him.

“The airplanes keep flying by, and they cry cause they've never even touched the sky” uses personification. The airplane crying is supposed to represent the fear Conan has of not getting into the school he’s worked for. He worries about all that he’s worked towards being completely turned upside down, like a dream he thought he was going to achieve turning out to be a lost cause.

He wrote this song as a way to show that he’s ready to leave, even if the future seems uncertain. He reminisces the past and how he accepts the inevitability of leaving the town and everyone he knows behind. Because “the idle town will stay as it stays and everyone I love's in this place”. Conan also shows his acceptance of moving on when he says “I never learned anybody's name we all vowed that we wouldn't stay” showing that he was ready to leave with no
