“Kissing signs on the interstate” is an example of imagery. It paints the picture of him and his friends going on car rides through his hometown, creating a nostalgia that was fleeting yet impressionable, like a kiss. “Springtime is when the air is thin” uses allusion to describe the tension in the air. Spring is usually the time where most colleges announce acceptance, rejection, and waitlists. For Conan and many others, it’s an extremely stressful time and as if they can hardly breathe. Spring is when the air is full of tension for him.
“The airplanes keep flying by, and they cry cause they've never even touched the sky” uses personification. The airplane crying is supposed to represent the fear Conan has of not getting into the school he’s worked for.
