Say that a man is caught using drugs. Police are notified and he is sent to prison. On one end, yes, he will go to jail and take a few free years out of his life. But, he will be put into rehab and will be taught to quit using the drugs that he once depended on. Which will, in the end, add years onto his life. In Some situations an event can both help and hurt someone. In the book The Kite Runner, during the ending scene Amir gets beaten by Assef. The scene is described in a very brutal, realistic way. Many would say that it hurt Amir. But it helped him also. He says on page 289 that “ for the first time since the winter of 1975, i felt at peace.” When he had been beaten he had felt relieved, like he had finally gotten what he deserved.
