People are uncontrollable, you can’t change what a person thinks or feels, nor what you think or feel. Humans can feel a lot of things, we feel a diverse range of emotions, which can be great in terms of understanding one another, but it could also be a downfall. One of those feelings, is guilt. Guilt is not a very pleasant feeling, and when you feel it constantly it starts to get to you. And sometimes you act on those feelings. He tried to get Hassan to hurt him, but Hassan was too loyal, and could never hurt Amir the way he hurt Hassan. Amir hurt him again and again, but Hassan protected Amir till the very end. One of Amir’s first actions based on guilt was when he hit Hassan with pomegranates. ”I hit him with another pomegranate, in the shoulder this time. The juice splattered his face. “Hit me back!” I spat. “Hit me back, goddamn you!” I wished he would. I wished he’d give me the punishment I craved, so maybe I’d finally sleep at night.” Amir hit Hassan with pomegranates, until he was out of breath and didn’t have the energy to anymore. Forty years Ali’s been with my family. Forty goddamn years. And you think I’m just going to throw him out?” “I’ve never laid a hand on you, Amir, but you ever say that again…” He looked away, shaking his head. You bring me shame.” Amir was never really that close with his father, not up until a few months ago. He finally had the relationship he had always wanted with his father, until that one question ruined it. His father thought of Ali and Hassan like family, so Amir figured the only way to get rid of them was to mess up, just as he did. He did the only thing he thought to do at this point, frame Hassan. He decided he was going to blame Hassan for stealing money and his new watch. Before he went to bed he asked his father where his watch was, and in the morning he hid it in Hassan’s home. “I lifted Hassan’s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it.” The guilt had completely gotten to him. And when Baba asked Hassan if he had really taken the watch and the money, he had said yes, because
