Kitty Hawk Flyer Research Paper

929 Words4 Pages

After failure and failure finally on December 17th, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with numbingly chill temperatures, 27 mph winds, at 10:35 a.m., a widely unknown ariel invention lifts off with one of two brothers in the seat flying over 120 feet in the time span of 12 seconds. The Kitty Hawk Flyer was the first successful airplane. It changed the world in many aspects including war, industries, and everyday regular life. It stands as a symbol for many people through time and history. The Kitty Hawk Flyer was made in 1903 by the fathers of modern aviation: the Wright brothers. The Flyer weighed in at 750 lbs, had a wingspan of 40 ft, wing area of 510 sq ft., a length of 21 ft, and finally an horizontal 4-cylinder, water-cooled, 12 horsepower …show more content…

The brothers made a deal with the U.S. War Department to invent a better version of the airplane that could carry two people, consistently fly at 40 mph, have an air time of at least one hour, and have enough fuel for 125 miles. Soon the world would revolve around aviation and it would become a major factor in war. By the time World War I arrived the use of airplanes was widespread. To increase the survival rate of soldiers in this war the U.S. needed to produce better and more aircraft.
Examples include planes such as bombers and fighter planes. The bombers were made to carry bombs while the fighters were made to be quicker and very agile. The production value raised in World War I due to the necessity of materials. Industries grew and factories sprouted. Then, World War II aerial warfare was abundant and whoever was more advanced in this subject when it came to planes one would gain a war advantage and potentially become a world power. Planes in warfare opened up a whole new world when it came to weapons. Airplanes were able to transport weapons such as the nuclear bomb and napalm. Napalm was first used in planes in the 1940s by the U.S. that demonstrated its power. Another display of the power airplanes could give was transportation for atomic bombs. The U.S. dropped Little Boy and Fat Man on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th, 1945 in World War II. This caused America to grow to a world power, cause tension between countries, and partially sparked the cold war. In the 1950s the two world powers: America and Russia, were competing and caused the development of jet fighters that broke the sound barrier. The new possibilities that planes opened played a major role in competition, weapons, and war throughout history and even
