In this reflective piece I’m gonna tell about why it is important to know the beliefs and traditions of those who came before us. Also it is important not to ignore the past. I will tell issues from today, long ago, personal issues, and issues that my ancestors or relatives might have encountered. All these things will help you understand the two topics. I used references or quotes from the stories we read in class that helped me understand these topics.
It is very important to know the beliefs and traditions of those who came before of us. It is important because we should stop making assumptions about people and things we really don’t know about. Like in the story they said they “learned to respect one another’s rights.” We have to be respectful …show more content…

The past has educated us with so many good lessons. The past is the reason we know how to do things and treat people today. If it weren’t for the past we wouldn’t know even half the stuff we know now. We also don’t want to repeat the past because bad things happened. We have already learned from those things and made a change. If everyone ignores the past we are in extreme danger of repeating it. In the story it says “love is something you and I must have.” This is important because if we don’t love we will just hate. Hate will bring up the past and we’ll just repeat old problems. If we repeat old problems the world will be at war. War brings much devastation, nobody wants devastation. I have had personal encounters with these things before. Like segregation, you would think we learned and moved on, but nope. People still are racist and disrespectful to certain races today. Someone once made a racist comment about me being half black. Since I am biracial I am both white and black. Some people say I “only act black” or they “can’t even tell I’m white because I don’t act like it”. Some people are disrespect my characteristics of my race. Such as my hair texture, or skin tone, or maybe what I eat, or how I talk and what I say. In the story “Freedom walkers” and “JoAnn Robinson” I learned a little more about how back then almost everyone was racist. In “freedom walkers” it said “People were separated by race from the moment they were born….” This is called segregation and it used to happen, it makes me sad to think that people really thought skin color decided how a person was inside. It also said “it was against the law for a white person and a negro to play checkers on public property or ride in a taxi together.” This is sad because they acted like they would catch a disease or something also that they made hateful names that they called the “colored.” I believe all colors are beautiful, and everyone else should too. A quote from “JoAnn Robinson” is “which were reserved for white riders only” , this isn’t the full sentence but i think it’s the most important part.
