Do you really know the significance of Thanksgiving? Although Thanksgiving might be about giving thanks for what we have, that’s not the entire meaning behind it. William Bradford wrote all about this in his book, The Plymouth Plantation. Bradford wrote about the first sustained treatment of New England’s early history. These books provide a background look at the Plymouth colony’s history and major events. Bradford’s story, Of Plymouth Plantation, demonstrates survival, leadership, and faith. To begin with, survival was a key feature that Bradford wrote about. There were many instances in which the separatists needed to survive difficult challenges. Bradford wrote, “And yet if they should, the miseries of the land which they should be exposed unto, would be too hard to be borne; and likely, some or all of them together, to consume and utterly to ruin them. These were all examples of problems the separatists had to overcome. Some of them might have survived, while others suffered greatly. In addition to survival, leadership plays a great role in the community. Leadership is a necessity when trying to start new towns, without it nothing would be organized or secure. Squanto demonstrated great leadership, “Squanto continued with them, and was their interpreter, and was a special instrument sent of God for their good beyond their expectation. He directed them how to set their corn, where to take fish, and to procure other commodities, and was also their pilot to bring them to unknown places for their profit, and never left them till he died”(pg.91). Squanto, although not necessarily the leader, showed great leadership skills. He was able to speak English to the separatists and communicate properly with them.
