Knowledge is Important Could the world, as it is known today, still exist without knowledge? In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, the society that Montag lives in is shielded from knowledge. In Montag’s world reading books is illegal to read books because the people are afraid that the books might offend people. However, instead of helping the society, the absence of knowledge has made the people in their society ignorant and unaccepting of change. Knowledge is important because it provides power, educates ignorant people, and helps express individuality. Knowledge is important because it provides power. Knowledge is a way to get someone voice heard. In today’s world people are commemorated for being knowledgeable, however in the novel Clarisse was pushed aside and looked down upon for taking the time to learn new things. When ignorant people are educated they become aware of what is happening around them. One example of trying to educate an ignorant person is when Montag is trying to explain to Mildred what he saw at the burning house. Montag says, “There must be something in books, things we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house…” (Bradbury 48). Unfortunately, in this situation Mildred does not take the knowledge that she has just been handed. This important because even though Mildred denies the information that she has just learned she cannot unlearn it. Another time that Mildred denied information that she was given, is when she overdoses on sleeping pills. Montag says, “You took all the pills in your bottle last night” (Bradbury 17). Mildred does not accept this as the truth because she does not believe that she would do something like that. Though ignorant people may not always accept knowledge given to them, it is still important that they are aware of what is truly happening around
