Knowledge of the Sport The most important quality of a sports coach is knowledge of the sport you coach beyond the general rules and regulations. Basic knowledge is sufficient for youth sports, but a detailed knowledge base is essential for college and professional sports. This knowledge includes an in-depth understanding of the skills, tactics and strategies required for effective training, practices and game-day decisions. Most sports evolve over time, making it essential for coaches to learn new information as the competition, training techniques and rules change. Coaching clinics and camps are an opportunity to learn these new techniques while gaining knowledge of the game. Having knowledge in the sport of rugby allows the coach to make game plans and strategies in order to win the game, for example where to lift the person in a lineout in both an attacking and a defending situation. Without this knowledge of the sport the coach can easily misdirect the players, which would lead to them not using the knowledge that had been passed down. Knowledge of the rules and laws means knowing what is and isn’t allowed in a sport, for example in rugby, players are not allowed to pass the ball forwards. If a coach was to forget to inform the player of this rule then penalties would be given to the other team. As well as this, the players’ safety could be in danger, especially in a game of rugby where contact is involved. By teaching players the rules and laws allows them to abide them and to the have a more successful game as well as keeping the game
