There is an article called “How to Write a Memoir” by William Zinsser that contains three main pieces of advice, think small, be yourself, and speak freely. I read a book called “Guts” by Gary Paulsen that follows two of these pieces of advice. In chapter two of “Guts” Gary follows Zinsser’s advice on writing as you speak. He talks about the time when the carburetor in the Cessna he was in froze over. The pilot landed the plane on a frozen river covered with snow, as the plane was equipped with wheels and skis.
The theme of the poem is never giving up and it portrays Mr. Fisher being resilient about the “Erik Fisher Football Dream.” Mr Fisher in this poem is seen to be as the “man in the shadows” as he is always lurking behind Erik trying to make his dream come true. The tone of this poem is obsession and almost mysterious. Throughout the piece it is conveyed with words such as “pointless vision the man would not let go of” and “determined to make the delusion exist.” This provides the tone of obsession with the connotation of the words.
In How to Write a Memoir, William Zinsser gives information to encourage his writers. Such as, “Be Yourself,” “Speak Freely,” and “Think Small.” Some memoirs follow what he does, and some do not. In this memoir, “Soul Surfer,” Bethany Hamilton supports Zinsser’s writing ideas through her use of her own point of view, honest storytelling, and a lot of small and past memories. Zinsser says that the best memoirs are written from a child’s point of view.
Cherrylog Road James Dickey’s poem, Cherrylog Road, is clearly an exhilarating, narrative poem. The speaker of this piece is a young man reminiscing of a past love affair that was forbidden. This is a provocative poem, told in the first person and is full of figurative language and symbolism. The setting of this poem is in a rural part of an unnamed Southern state, off of Highway 96 at Cherrylog Road. It is at the peak of a summer afternoon in a junkyard full of discarded cars.
In the memoir’’ How to write a memoir’’, written by William Zinsser, Zinsser goes into specific detail for beginner memoir writers on how do you write a memoir. He encourages each of them to ‘’ Be themselves’’,’’ Tell their own story and they should write about what they want’’, and ‘’ Think small, don’t over think what you are writing about. ’’(Zinsser’s memoir pages 2,4,6) This advice tells beginner memoir writer to express who you are and say as much as you would like to say. In the memoir ‘’ Bad Boy’’, Walter Dean Myers gives a lot of insight on what his childhood was like.
The 1970s were a rough year for African-Americans, still fighting for social and political rights in the United States. Consequently, women still did not receive equal rights. However, in 1972, “Congress approved the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution, which reads: ‘Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex’ (History.com Staff).” Out of the thirty-eight necessary states only twenty-two ratified it right away, it was relieving for the moment because the feminist advocates had been trying to be ratified since 1923. The First African-American woman elected into Congress was Shirley Chisholm.
Freedom is a right that every human should have. Without freedom, the world is a dim and dull place. The poem,“Hurt Hawks” by Robinson Jeffers is about injured hawks that face the issue of no longer having freedom and feeling defeated. Throughout this poem, Jeffers uses symbolism, exposition, conflict, tone, as well as falling and rising action to deliver a poem with character. The second piece of literature, “Silent Protest” by Shadi Eskandani is about the fight for women’s rights in the Muslim religion and culture.
In the poem “Knucks” by Carl Sandburg, the author creates a worshipful and reflective tone. In the text, the speaker feels this way because the speaker likes looking at the town and he tends to pay attention to small details of the town. As the speaker looked through the town, he spotted a store that sold “knucks”. He was trying out one when a comment made him reflect about the town that he was in, realizing that he was in Abraham Lincoln’s hometown. When he was strolling and look around, the speaker paid attention to things of the town like “Wrapped in battle flags, / Wrapped in the smoke of memories, /
The Poem “The Poet” by Tom Wayman is a poem that takes the reader through the physical characteristics of your average poet. The entirety of the “The Poet” consists of a list of 14 descriptors that could be used to describe the typical poet. Each of the descriptive phrases seems to be negative towards the unknown poet that he is talking about. Although the poem seems quite literal, a figurative message is portrayed though text, tone, structure and the literary devices used in the poem. To start off, the specific word usage that Wayman chose to use gives off the impression that poets have their drawbacks.
Licata "After Us" Essay In "After Us" Connie Wanek uses imagery of rain to show that the human race will either continue to grow or it will destroy itself. "After Us" is talking about the human race, either at the beginning or end of its existence. It talks about a perfect world, one that has grown and flourished, but it starts to rain. They do not know if it is the rain will stop and they will continue to live, or if the rain will go on forever therefor eventually destroying humanity.
Bruce Dawe highlights the damaging nature of consumerism and how it has led to the loss of Australian identity in his poems ‘Enter Without So Much As Knocking’ and ‘Americanized’. The two poems were written around the 1950-the 1960s when these societal changes were becoming prevalent. The dark satire comedy "Enter Without So Much As Knocking" is about a regular man who lives in the suburbs in the 1950s. The persona ages over the course of the stanzas and gradually begins to engage in the endless cycle of consumerism. On the other hand, the poem "Americanized," combines a cultural imperialist theme with the comparison of a domineering mother and her child who represent America and Australia.
Fissured perception in Beachy Head Beachy Head, Charlotte Smith’s swan song of a poem, was published in 1807. Differing opinions on the poem’s seeming incompleteness betray an underlying fissured element- an element at once tangible and intangible, parting its way through the substratum of 19th century notions on gender, poetics, aesthetics, history and science. Smith intended Beachy Head to be the “local subject” (Fry 31) on which she would rivet her Fancy and her theme. However, like an unrestrained coil spiraling outwards, the poem is anything but fixed. There is liquidity, apropos to the setting by the Sussex shoreline, which creates a flux between temporal, spatial and factual elements, thereby strengthening the schismatic politics
Drifters by Bruce Dawe “Why have hope?”, is the question raised in the poem “Drifters” by Bruce Dawe. Bruce Dawe’s poem explores how change can damage a family 's relationship and cause them to drift apart. This poem has underlying and straight forward themes depicted about change. Straight forward depiction is the physical movement of the family from place to place and not everyone is in favour of this change. The very first line of the poem, “One day soon he’ll tell her it’s time to start packing”, supports the inevitable change that no one else has a say in except the man.
The poem “To This Day” by Shane Koyczan is to make the readers understand that there is hope for the ones who got, or even get bullied in school. Bullying happens every day in a regular school day and probably not on school days. “So we grew up believing that no one would ever fall in love with us, that we’d be lonely, forever.” (Line 23) The poet explains how by the countless names that the bullied endured, he thought no one could ever properly love the mistreated.
