The Kohlman Evaluation of Living Skills (KELS) is an assessment commonly administered by occupational therapists in mental health settings. This assessment tool can be used to determine a patient’s ability to perform higher level living skills, more specifically instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). Seventeen living skills are assessed and fall into the following five categories: self-care, safety and health, money management, transportation and telephone, work and leisure. Ultimately, this assessment can help clinicians understand areas their patients need assistance and can use this information to help guide treatment sessions. In therapy, the therapist could address this by guiding the patient in hygiene groups. The therapist could ask the patients questions like, “what does good hygiene mean to you?” Or, “how often do you think you should shower?” Having a conversation would be a good start to learn more about Patient’s understanding and later introduce appropriate self-hygiene tasks. Self-hygiene is necessary for Patient to maintain employment and be accepted by peers. Next, Patient also requires assistance in obtaining and maintaining source of income. Patient is currently unemployed and reports she would like to get her own studio one day. It is necessary the OT and Patient work together to discuss future employment opportunities. Next, it would be important for the Patient to seek open positions which she fits qualifications for. Patient has been in and out of group homes, the state hospital, and YMCA. Patient is not independent in budgeting money for food and scores needing assistance in budgeting for food. The following short-term and long-term goals could be used in treatment to address this
