Business Background The reputable corporation started in 1962 when Max Kohl opened the first Kohl’s department store in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Today, Kohl’s operates 1,100+ stores throughout 49 states with a winning team of 140,000 associates. (Kohl's Corporation, 2016) There are currently 13 distribution centers located in 9 states, specifically one in Georgia, Illinois Maryland, Missouri, New York and Virginia. Two in Ohio and Texas and lastly, three located in California. This allocation of distribution centers ensures quick shipments to stores and deliveries through ecommerce orders. This was an executive move in order to keep up with their top competitors who were also transitioning to an ecommerce retailer. Online shopping was becoming increasingly popular from customers due to the convenience and advancement in technology evolving each day. The expansion of Kohl’s to include Kohls.com allowed continuous convenience by having the ability to serve each their customers anytime anywhere. Kohl’s corporation has always positioned themselves between discounters and high-end department stores, their mission is “to be the leading family-focused, value-oriented, specialty department store offering quality exclusive and national brand merchandise to the customer in an environment that is convenient, friendly and exciting” (Kohl's Corporation, 2016). In addition, Kohl’s also established a unique environmental mission worth noting. “To be a leading environmentally responsible retailer through focused resource stewardship by our associates and venders” (Kohl's Corporation, 2016).
