Koprowski's Explanation Of The Origin Of AIDS

705 Words3 Pages

The commonly accepted explanation of the origin of AIDS is that the disease came from chimpanzees who were carrying Simmian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV). SIV is very similar in many aspects to HIV and these similarities led to SIV being accepted as a predecessor to HIV. The first AIDS strain, L70 was identified in 1959 in the Belgian Congo. It is though that the first human to contract AIDs became infected when they were cleaning bushmeat to eat. The infected person then spread the disease through the expulsion of their bodily fluids. Although the scientific community widely favors this theory, “it fails to explain why AIDS has appeared only recently since monkeys have been hunted and eaten across Africa for hundreds of years.”

The Attenuated Polio Vaccine states that impure polio vaccines were the cause of AIDS. This theory especially implicates Hilary Koprowski as seen in a 1992 Rolling Stone …show more content…

There are many factors that come into play with this decision. First, Koprowski’s vaccine was given to over a million people, many of whom were in the Belgian Congo, a region that has many geographic similarities to where AIDS started and an area that is now the epicenter of the epidemic. Secondly, there is footage showing chimpanzees being brought into Camp Lindy in large numbers and there are statements that say evry single one of the chimpanzees ended up dead. However, the blood and tissue samples were collected and preserved and there are employee testimonies that claim they used the kidneys of the chimpanzees to make the tissue cultue for the vaccine. There are also many well respected people who believe that Koprowski’s methods were largely to blame for the AIDS epidemic. These include Bill Hamilton, Ed Hooper, and even Sabin himself, who in 1958 determined Koporwski’s vaccine to be unstable. All of thses factors combine to convince me that this is the theory of the origin of AIDS that is best
