Kouzes and Posner, in discussing how leaders should model the way, wrote, “Titles are granted, but it’s your behavior that earns you respect” (Kouzes & Posner, 2012, p.16). In General Patton’s obituary, published by the New Times, it conveyed a popular story that was fondly told by the Soldiers he led. The obituary stated, “One of his men brought back the story that he swam the icy, 150-foot Sauer River in January, 1945, under machine gun and artillery fire, to inspire the men of the Third to follow him” (New York Times, 1945). While General Patton publicly acknowledged that this event didn’t happen, it shows the level of respect they had for a General that often displayed the drive, dedication and tenacity that he expected of every Soldier in his command. They knew that he was willing to lead by example, to model the way. Prior to starting the 3rd Army’s forced entry into Northern Africa he assembled his leadership and gave one of the most famous and inspirational addresses that not only rallied inspiration but provided his vision. While the movie focuses on General Patton, it does touch on his coordinating efforts across his command. Throughout each depicted battle it shows examples of his mission analysis and assignment of responsibilities to his subordinate commanders. While forceful and direct, the movie shows a great level of trust between General Patton and his at one time subordinate, General Bradley. Patton is shown giving Bradley and his other subordinates direction, and then allowing them to execute, displaying high levels of respect and trust. “The more trusted people feel, the better they innovate” (Kouzes & Posner, 2012, p. 220).
