In “The Nose” the narrator tries to convince us that social rank plays an important part in determining a person’s life. There are several instances throughout the story that concentrate on the ranks of social status and how it can affect an individual who has misplaced or lost that status in society. From the beginning of the passage of “The Nose”, Kovalyov is presented as an individual who is worried about his appearance and what other individuals holding titles and government ranks might think or say of him. He falsely advertised his government position in order to obtain what he wanted like attractive females. If he never called himself “Major’ then he wouldn’t be acknowledged by others such as the attractive women because being a collegiate assessor was an average rank.His reputation must have been somewhat of a good one as he even received an offer to marry Mrs. Podtochin’s daughter. Mrs. Podtochin has a husband who is a state officer and her daughter is very pretty which he liked to chase around. Kovalyov had declined to get married claiming to be too young to find a wife. Also he wanted to spend at least 5 more years in the service. Kovalyov’s belief was that Mrs.Podtochin had sought out revenge and used some type of magic (“witches to spirit it away”). He was determined to link pieces of his life story together to come up with a logical explanation for the disappearance of his nose. Instead, he preferred using his social status and government rank to find himself attractive ladies and invite them to his place. While in public, his face was always covered using a handkerchief hence showing his desperation to keep his image. He was not his usual self because even at the coffee house, he eluded from smiling at anyone yet on all other days, he loved to be viewed as a man of the people. The most significant surprise in the story is when Kovalyov encounters his nose walking around in uniform. He was nervous and unsure of how to approach the situation and ends up following the nose around. The nose heads to the church to pray, and this is where Kovalyov gets a chance for a conversation with it. The nose seemed well aware of himself as an entirely different status from Kovalyov. The nose proves that he was a government officer from a different department by his uniform/buttons and therefore expresses that it was of a high status too.
