KROGERS MOD 440 Strategic Planning Kathy Vest Bethel University Cora Wright October 27, 2014 Krogers 1 KROGERS History Krogers was founded in 1883 by Bernard Henry Kroger. Barney was the 5th of ten children born to a German immigrant couple. During Barney youth, his family lived above their dry good store that they owned. Apparently the family business was not doing well because Barney had to go to work at the age of 13. Barney had several jobs before he decided to start his own business. The reason for this was that the last employers he worked for would not let Barney become a partner. So Barney took his life savings of $372 and started his first grocery store. It was located downtown Cincinnati Ohio, on Pearl Street. Since Barney was the son of a merchant, he ran his business with the motto that later became his mission statement, stated, “Be particular. Never sell anything you would not buy yourself.” That motto has aided Krogers in staying in business for over 130 years with formats that is aimed in pleasing the ever-changing needs of customers. Today Krogers is ranked as one of the world’s largest retailers. They have over 2,600 stores in 34 states, with annual sales of more than $98 billion.
