Kurt Vonnegut was a famous American writer who was born on November 11, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Vonnegut was known for writing novels and essays like Cate's Cradle, Breakfast of Champions, and Slaughterhouse-five. Kurt was considered one of the most dominant American novelists in the twentieth century. Kurt was a very unique person. He created unheard of worlds and characters in his stories to make them more interesting. (Kurt Vonnegut Biography) Vonnegut studied at Cornell University from 1940 to 1942. Shortly after Cornell University he joined the army, and after the army he went to Caregie Mellon University to study engineering. Having struggled with depression, he attempted to take his own life in 1984 (Kurt Vonnegut Biography). Vonnegut’s vision of reality in daily life must have been affected by some of the events that occurred while he was a young man, such as the suicide of his mother on mother’s day, while he was home on leave, becoming a prisoner of war, and the death of his sister Alice from cancer. Whatever struggles he had, Vonnegut became a valued idol with devoting supporters. Kurt married his high school lover, Jane Marie Cox after he returned from war. They had their first child named, Mark. Shortly after they, had two more children, Edith and Nanette. (Vonnegut) After the death of Kurt’s sister he and his wife took in three of Alice’s children. It became more urgent for Vonnegut to bring in more money. The short-story market was drying up and so he decided to turn his attention to novels. In the books, Kurt mastered his trademark making his audience laugh regardless of the disturbing horrors he described. During the early 1970’s, Kurt became one of the most famous living writers on earth, but the 1970’s also proved a difficult time for him.
