Kurzel's Depiction Of The Witches In Macbeth By William Shakespeare

Shakespeare or Justin Kurzel? Shakespeare wrote the tragedy Macbeth to make an example of the dangers and repercussions of one's unknown ambitions. Act 1, scenes 1 and 2, set the tone for the play. In scene 1 of Shakespeare's version, the witches speak with Macbeth and Banquo which sparks a burning ambition in Macbeth and then in Lady Macbeth. While Kurzel opens with the burial of Macbeth's child, a battle scene, and then the interactions between Banquo and Macbeth with the witches. Although both are of the story Macbeth, they both offer different interpretations from reading the play versus watching the play.

Shakespeare does not mention that the witches are watching Macbeth and his men get ready for battle against Macdonald, he skips completely over the battle and introduces the reader to Duncan, Malcolm, and the Captain at the beginning of scene two. The original allows the reader to use his or her imagination as the Captain describes what Macbeth did to Macdonald as he says “Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements.”(Shakespeare-1.2.23-25) This particular scene lets the reader recognize how Macbeth was once an honorable noble hero who served right by his king but turned into someone who let their deepest aspiration for power and control take them …show more content…

The beginning of the film is written out like the play but offers time and visuals for the reader to appreciate the scenes being shown. Kurzel adds the burial scene to start the film but there is no speaking among the characters, only music being played and also in the battle scene that is shown right after. I think that the silence between characters in these two scenes is what makes them so great. The battle scene is magnified in the film because of the music and seeing all of the gore and debris, like mud and swords being swung in super slow motion adds tension and really opens the viewers eyes as to how simple changes or add-ons can change the whole experience or mood of the piece.
Macbeth as a play, in general, tends to focus on the importance of children and their role as heirs. We know Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have children of which do not make it because they are either stillborn or become ill as a toddler and pass away making the two of them to have the paternal and maternal instincts which can be observed in the film rather than in the
