Introduction LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a third- party certification program that is nationally accepted organization for design, operation and construction of high performance green buildings (LEED 2008). It also makes sure that the constructed buildings are environmentally sound, compatible and profitable. It is one of the most popularly used programs all over the world. LEED- ND “LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED- ND) is a US based rating system, which integrates the principle of smart growth, urbanism and green building into a national system of neighborhood design.” (wikipedia 2010) This rating system was developed through a partnership between: a. US Green Building Council b. Congress for the New Urbanism c. Natural Resources Defense Council Key strategies of the LEED-ND rating system are organized into 3 basic sections. They are: a. Smart Location and Linkage (SLL)- where to build b. Neighborhood Pattern and Design (NPD)- what to build c. Green Infrastructure and Buildings (GIB)- how to manage environmental impacts LEED certified buildings receive rating systems in 4 different ways: a. Certified: 40- 49 points b. Silver: 50- 59 points c. Gold: 60- 79 points d. Platinum: 80- 106 points 4.
