Preston Lipscomb 5/22/17 Hernan Cortes Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conqueror. He was born in 1485 in Medellin, Spain. He died on December 2, 1547. He invaded Mexico in 1519, and he conquered the Aztec Empire in 1521. His parents’ names were Martin Cortez and Catalina Pizarro Altamirano.
Ever since Luna Garcias was born, she has been a household servant at the Garcias family, who is well-known for raising their bulls for bullfighters. As Luna’s mother died at childbirth, she is raised by the loyal housemaid, Panqui who taught her obedience. However, within the bulls that are raised by the Garcias family, she finds a burning passion. With an ambitious quality, she craves to be a bullfighter as she believes that it is a way that will lift her out of poverty. Thus, every night, she will secretly practice doing what she believes is bullfighting, until she is caught one day by Manuel, the eldest son of the Garcias.
Jose Doroteo Arango Arambula also known as Francisco Villa or as we know him Pancho Villa was born June 5, 1878 and was one of the most important Mexican Revolutionary general in Mexico. Pancho Villa was born Doroteo Arango, the son of a sharecropper at the hacienda in San Juan Del Rio, Durango. While growing up, Pancho Villa witnessed and experienced the harshness of peasant life. In Mexico during the late 19th century, the rich were becoming richer by taking advantage of the lower classes, often treating them like slaves. When Villa was 15, his father died, so Villa began to work as a sharecropper to help support his mother and four siblings.
The famous Tejano Queen, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was born in Houston, Texas on April 16, 1971. Selena was involved in the music industry from a very early age because her family was struggling to find a way to get by. Selena started off singing with her siblings, calling themselves, “Selena y Los Dinos”. Quickly Selena’s music career started taking off and soon enough Selena became known all over the United States as the Queen of Tejano music. Selena was murdered on March 31, 1995 by one of the members of her fan club.
Selena's Musical Career Selena Quintanilla Pérez was a famous Mexican-American singer. Selena had an amazing career in the making. Selena sang Disco, Tejano, and Technocumbia music whenever ever she performed. Selena had it rough growing up as a singer because she was a girl.
Dia de los Muertos means “Day of the Dead”. It is celebrated on November the first and second. It is a celebration of the lives of our deceased family and friends. This holiday is usually thought of as a Mexican holiday, but Latin Americans also celebrate this unique holiday. Dia de los Muertos originated in Mexico.
Los Angeles was the strong hold for the Cristeros in California, it had the largest Mexican community at the time and a large portion of the priest that were exiled from Mexico went to Los Angeles. The pro-Cristero community in LA was strong because they had large numbers of protestors and they got a lot of support from the Mexican Catholic Churches in the State. The pro-Cristero supports and Mexcian Catholic Churches in LA did a great job in bringing in supporters, because they combine regular church activities with sermons on the Cristero activities. Maquiladoras are industries run by foreign companies. They’re major contributors to the economy of Mexico. Maquiladoras were first introduced in 1965 to help increase exports and help industrialization along the U.S and Mexico border. President Donald Trump wants to build a wall alongside Mexico’s border. This wall goes against the North American Free Trade Agreement as imports and exports between Mexico and America will be affected due to the strict regulations.
Throughout history, various ancient civilizations all over the globe have created traditions and customs that have been passed down through generation to generation. The idea of having these customs withstand the test of time is truly remarkable. A perfect example of the passing of tradition is the Mexican celebration of El Dia De Los Muertos. El Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday that honors and celebrates loved ones of family who have passed away. Although it has its origins from the Aztec Empire, the holiday is widely celebrated in Latin America and even some parts of the United States.
Although Selena was becoming one of the most popular people in Tejano music, she still struggled with speaking Spanish. As it was her goal to take her music across all barriers, she knew she had to master the language if she wanted to make a difference (Marvis 12). She could sing in Spanish with the help of her father, but when it came to talking in press conferences and with others, she had difficulty with the language. She did not let her mistakes discourage her from trying to speak the language. Instead, she often laughed off her mistakes in Spanish interviews and never gave up trying to master the language (López 13).
The legend of the Virgen de Guadalupe has become a common symbol of hope to many incoming immigrants of Latin American countries. Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.
Buena Vista—which literally translates to ‘Good View’ in English—is a really nice place to stay in Colorado. The park is known to be the longest whitewater park in the United States. The park features many fishing venues for those who are into fishing.
