architecture. Similarities and differences Design Since the design of La Rotonda is based on Pantheon, it shares similar properties in some aspect of the design. However, differences also can be seen in the use of columns. While Villa Rotonda used ionic columns, the pantheon used Corinthian columns, influenced by Greek architectures. The number of columns used to sustain portico was also different, as La Rotonda used only 6 on each side (total of 24) whereas the pantheon used 16 columns. Another difference is that they have a different base plan of the building. However, La Rotonda has a contrasting imagery of interior and exterior and the religious significance is emphasized through the contrasting designs. The interior view is rather colorful and vivid, due to abundant frescoes and paintings, which symbolizes religious life of Almerico and celebrating religious values as a whole. However the exterior illustrates a sober and calm image, along as portraying the sacred. The use of Ancient Roman temples and classical elements as their base designs successfully portrays the religious aspects on the building. Building materials The building materials of Pantheon and La Rotonda are similar. To emphasize the idea of perfection, he used antique elements from Roman temple architectures. For instance, to signify the entrance, Palladio used portico from Roman temple to symbolize sacred image and to illustrate a dignified entrance. Similarly in Pantheon, it has porticos as one of the building elements. However, the interior of La Rotunda is decorated with stucco and frescoes to illustrate an elegant imagery.
