Lab 2: Population: Constructing and Interpreting an Age Structure Diagram
Introduction
In this lab we constructed five age structure diagrams for five countries. These countries are the United States, Italy, India, Ethiopia, and Brazil. These five diagrams display the patterns in population. The diagrams display the number of pre-reproductive and post-reproductive individuals in these countries. One side of the pyramid is for males and the other half is for females. The pyramids indicate the population for each five year age class. It starts from age 0-4, and goes up. If the pyramid is uniform this means slow growth rate. If the pyramid is inverted that means there is a decline in population,

We used the US Census Bureau’s site to receive all our population data for the five countries. The link is http://www.census.gov/population/international/data/. Then we clicked on the IDB link and chose “Population by Five year Age Groups”, for year 2010. After that you chose the country and then submitted. Once we did this a new screen popped up. We clicked on the excel link. By doing that we downloaded all our data to Microsoft Excel. On excel we had to manipulate the data. We omitted all of the total population info, and we also made the male data negative. Once we finished manipulating the data we selected the 2-D stacked bar chart to create our population pyramids. The Y axis on each pyramid was moved to the left and it displayed the age-class. The X-axis was the population percentage. We also changed the color code of the female side so we could distinguish the male from the female side. Each pyramid is labeled with the name of the …show more content…
For instance, United States Population pyramid is almost uniform. The population growth in the United Stated will be numerically stable if these reproductive trends continue. Italy will have a negative population growth if the same reproductive trends continue. The pre- reproductive age classes’ percentages are too small. India will continue to grow with the current reproductive trends. Ethiopia’s diagram shows rapid growth, so if the trends continue this way the population will continue to increase. Brazil’s population will continue to increase. Brazil has high percentages in the in the pre-reproductive and reproductive areas of its pyramid. This can only mean more rapid
