I. Abstract

Obesity is an excessive amount of fat that accumulates in adipose tissues. According to World Health Organization (WHO), 2.8 million people dies every year because of obesity. Body Mass Index(BMI) is used to measure obesity level. A person with BMI equal 30 or more is considered obese. Many chronic diseases associate with obesity, like heart diseases and diabetes. Prevention from obesity depends on changing lifestyle and eating habits. In severe conditions, obesity has to be treated be surgery.

BMI or Body Mass Index is a measure that is used to determine whether a person has obesity or not. It depends on the weight of the person divided by the square of his or her height. For World Health Organization, A person with BMI greater than or equal to 25 is an overweight, while a person with BMI greater than or equal to 30 is obese. Starting with life style management that include changes in eating habits and increased physical activities. Other treatment methods include dietary changes and weight-loss surgery. Dietary changes depend on reducing calories and practicing healthier eating habits to treat and overcoming obesity. There is no best weight-loss diet. It all relies on a number of calories that are consumed. All foods have a certain number of calories within a given amount (volume). Some foods such as desserts, candies, fats and processed foods are high in energy density. This means that a small quantity of that food has a significant number of calories. In contrast, other foods, such as fruits and vegetables, have lower energy density. These foods provide a broader portion size with a fewer number of calories. By eating larger portions of foods that have fewer calories, hunger pangs will be reduced. In some cases, weight-loss surgery, also called bariatric surgery, is an option.
