All around the world people put different labels on people and things. Some are positive and some are negative, but they can affect a person’s emotions and life forever. The idea that labeling can affect a person’s emotions and life is shown in Cecelia Ahern’s Flawed novel. During the story, Celestine has a negative label put on her for doing something that was morally right but was seen as bad in her society. The label changed every aspect of her life from emotions to what she could eat. Flawed tries to convey the idea that putting negative labels on a person can cause unhappiness like how in the real world when a negative label is put on a person it makes them become unhappy with aspects of their life and themselves. Celestine, while talking to her mom about the rules that she must follow, says “there is no f*****g bright side” (137). Celestine is unhappy with the situation that being named flawed has put her in. This is shown using explicit language. When Celestine says that there is no bright side, she means that there is no way out of being flawed, and with the negative label that she poses her situation will only get worse and worse. This implies that she is unhappy with her situation due to her negative label. Another example of people unhappy with their situation due to labels comes when D is canceled for using multiple slurs. When D apologized for using the slurs he “appeared sad about losing his friends” (41 Yar and Bromwich). Since D had been cancelled, he had lost his friend. The example shows that he is unhappy with his situation by showing that he appeared sad when he realized he was going to lose his friends.
