What is the most important for me to improve in the next year? In the next year, it is very important for me to learn more about the labor movement. To get a better grasp of the movement, I hope to attend the AFL-CIO Bonnie Ladin Union Skills New Young Staff Training Program. This program will help me to get an in-depth education about the movement that will allow me to better contribute to the organization. This course will cover the structure of the labor movement and its organizations, the vocabulary needed to function in a union organization, and the impact of labor history and recent issues on labor culture, all of which I believe are essential to helping me acquire the knowledge that I need to be able to do my best work. As it stands now, I do not have a relationship with the network, which is crucial I believe to fundraising, having those relationships will allow me to know the local coalitions better, learn more about their work and which staff members to go to for asks/support. Because I learn best by hearing and visualizing information, I realize that I have to find ways that I can process information and learn through these methods. It is my hope to be able to sit in on monthly organizing team meetings to hear what is moving/challenges they are facing and what work is coming down the pipeline. I also plan to attend partner events and workshops to learn more about new issues/topics emerging in the movement. Realizing that I learn better by hearing/visualizing information, I recognize that my co-workers also have their own method of operating. To be more efficient in working with my co-workers, I realize that I need to get better at meeting them where they are instead of being frustrated by how they prefer to operate. It would be helpful if my superiors would pass on information about workshops, presentations, seminars that they think would be helpful for my development. What are my major accomplishments in the past year? When the racial justice task force discussed applying a racial justice lens to the national conference, there was talk about getting people like Alicia Garza to participate. I was hesitant to do so because I knew that we had people in our network that were doing great work for the movement for black lives and also didn’t want to jump on the bandwagon and have prominent BLM faces in the room. I was really adamant about this and it paid off because conference attendees were really appreciate to see their own colleagues, partners and allies talk about these issues and could relate.
