Philip Dray and his book “ There Is Power in a Union: The Epic Story of Labor in America” provide many information about the vital accomplishments of organized labor evangelists to draw upon. He show us the illuminate its central role in social, economic and political. Throughout his book, the security and dignity locate this struggle in all its various setting from union halls to the halls of Congress and the White House. He demonstrates the urgency of the contest between labor and capital still remains and influences today. The formation of stronger labor unions was a direct result of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Following the major strike, the 1909 Uprising of Twenty Thousand, the Triangle Factory was able to avoid joining the ILGWU, or the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (Greenwald, 2002). They were one of very few who did not join the ILGWE at the time because they were so successful, strikes did not matter to them from a business perspective. This meant that even if the employees joined the union, it was fruitless if the business did not recognize or join as well. The workers then had to come back to work without anything changed.
On September 2012, the Chicago teacher’s union began its first strike. In 1883, a machinist testified before the Senate Committee on Labor and Capital (Document D), and stated that a “great deal of difference” had taken place due to the instatement of Organized Labor forces. When asked to state the differences he had seen take place, he admitted that skilled jobs had been broken down, and because of technology and machinery, there was a lower demand for workers in general, skilled or unskilled. He also stated that “100 men are able to do now what it took 300 or 400 men to do fifteen years ago”. Conflicts between workers and employers are prevalent to this day. From fair wages, to better working conditions, and even to appropriate healthcare, there is always some form of questioning that needs to be addressed. Dating back to the late 1800’s the economy and labor market of the United States underwent massive changes which mainly revolved around people of all different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds becoming wage laborers. Due to these previously unheard-of changes, a conflict between the employees and employers began. Therefore, in order to resolve labor issues, through great difficulty workers created unions and protested against their employers.
It was stated by Charles Evans Hughes in a court case (Document F) that “[the] authority of the federal government may not be pushed to such as extreme.” This court case was in context of the government’s control over the poultry industry and he believed that the expansion in power, and specifically on businesses, was too much. Yet another example of businesses being put down is given by John L. Lewis in a NBC radio broadcast (Document G) where he talked about how business leaders “have no right” to not listen to union employees and cooperate with them. While corporate-union relationships ought to exist and facilitate workers with fair pay and conditions, it is also important especially during this time of hardship for businesses to be able to thrive so that the economy can be revived. Along with the control that they have, the government isn’t helping businesses either by giving them the backhand for not complying with the demands of unions; they are hindering businesses from growing.

Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies at Queens College of the City University of New York, and the editor of A New Labor Movement for the New Century (1998). No contact information is given and due to the fact that Mantsios is so well educated on the topic, there could be a slight bias towards the well educated.
The National Labor Relations Act allows employees to form a union or join a preexisting union. The same act prevents employers from standing in the way of workers attempting to unionize. Many organizations frown on unionization, but regardless of their opinion, they cannot interfere with employment rights. Employers are violating the law if they threaten employee 's jobs, question union activities, or eliminate benefits for employees by unionization. They also cannot offer benefits or perks to employees for refusing to unionize, as this could be seen as illegal persuasion (Employer/Union Rights, n.d.).
The Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor are just two examples of labor unions. Working in such poor conditions with little pay was a harsh reality. Labor unions provided at least some hope of change for workers. A worker in Hollitz explained that the reason he went on strike from George Pullman’s “model” company was because, “five reductions in wages, work, and in conditions of employment…” The railroad strike of 1877 grew violent, as workers demanded better wages.
Companies and corporations were also held accountable for the treatment of their employees from the formation of unions by the people. Today we see that the treatment of employees has become prioritized by some businesses and the evolution of voting
A labor union is a group of money earners that come together to promote and defend the interests of its members with respect to earnings and working conditions. Labor unions deal with employers on the behalf of its members through a process known as collective bargaining. In the United States, the first labor unions were on a regional level, when shoemakers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, organized in the 1790s. Terrible working conditions in the 19th century led to worker conditions. Employers fought back against the strikes by issuing demands, hiring private detectives and engaging in other dispositions.
Trade union membership worldwide has been decline due to structural factors that is smaller public sector, smaller manufacturing sector and fewer large firms. The labor market has become more volatile, with workers mobility, part time work, and lastly flexible work arrangements. Moreover, enlightened managements and mobility of capital as well as diversity of work force and workplace have reduced benefits of joining trade unions, impaired trade unions bargaining power and increased the cost of organizing. These developments have adversely affect trade union worldwide. This essay is based on the decline in trade union membership and the advantages and disadvantages of trade unions.
