There are few facts known to the common residents of modern Gravesend about the origins of their own local area. Gravesend is a neighborhood located in the most southern section of New York City in the borough of Brooklyn. Being one of the first colonial English towns in America, it holds a significant amount of historical content regarding the growth of America itself as a country, and the issues that it had once held in regards to equality. Women in particular, held limited rights that prevented them doing important roles in society. Many were denied the opportunity to leave their mark upon America, and returned to the role of a housewife. However, these limited rights that women once held in the colonial era became challenged by a woman of sheer determination, courage and conduct who had begun to rally men under her own banner which would later be known as Gravesend. The original founder of the colony Gravesend, Lady Deborah Moody was born in Avery, England during the year of 1586.She was brought up by her radical Protestant parents, who committed themselves in the practice of their religion. As a result Lady Deborah Moody became influenced by the Protestant belief under their wing, and would continue to hold onto her religion for many years to come. Despite the oppression by the English, Lady Deborah Moody spent her time in England, wedding the Knight known as Henry Moody on January 20th 1605 and officially obtained the title of Lady. Titles during this era were hard to come by, and were normally obtained either by hereditary or marriage. This title allowed her to obtain an influential part within her society and gave her a degree of respect even by men who were deemed “superior” at the time period due to gender inequality and
