The Symbol of Sleep in Macbeth In life, most things are not what they seem to be. In the play Macbeth this is no different. Most things in life have a surface and a deeper meaning. Take sleep for example, it can represent rest on a surface level or something like renewal on a deeper level.

Regardless of where one lives, nature surrounds them. It is quiet in the winter, blossoms in the spring, flourishes in the summer, and then finally it lays to rest in autumn. Often in literature, writers utilize natural imagery because it is something that can be easily understood by everybody regardless of race, gender, religion, creed, and ethnicity. This imagery provides a deeper understanding of the book, play, story, or poem for the reader. The prominent playwright William Shakespeare uses natural imagery throughout his play Macbeth to foreshadow upcoming events in the plot (or provide a deeper understanding of the play/its characters).
Insomnia In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare shows the consciences of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and how each one suffers when sleep is altered by their evil acts. This intricate use of sleep deprivation was used to indicate future turmoil. Sleep is a word that many associate with rest and being able to function. Influence of Witchcraft In Shakespeare’s day witches were not merely a novelty character brought out as a joke around Halloween. It was widely believed that witches were real and that they possessed powers that were considered to be of the devil. This belief in witchcraft eventually led to a widespread panic that was followed by the persecution of witches. Due to this belief in witchcraft at the time Macbeth was written and performed; the tone was already set. Shakespeare used this fear to create suspense within the play and it led to the involvement of the weird sisters and the crazed actions committed by Macbeth and his wife.
This might suggest that Shakespeare is telling the audience that Lady Macbeth identifies everything with disease or illness which can either mean that she (as queen) is a sickness that plagues Scotland, or that she herself is ailing. In act 4 scene 3, Macduff personifies the land of Scotland to “bleed” as “another gash is added to her wounds”, Macduff might be indicating that now that The Macbeth’s have turned away from God and killed the king (according to the Divine Right of Kings), they are unfit rulers and are therefore causing an illness to spread through the country. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth is said to be diseased herself: when in act 5 scene 3 Macbeth begs the doctor to cure her mind and tend to her with “some sweet oblivious antidote”, and the Doctor referred to her as a “patient”. Illness and disease have connotations of suffering and pain which connote that she is in deep anguish and in deep need of help, almost at the mercy- which Shakespeare has shown in act 5 scene 1, in her sleepless and almost insane state- she hardly seems capable of harming anyone else but
A story of tragedy is not uncommon with William Shakespeare and his works of prose. In his plays, death and despair is more likely than honor and prosperity. This is an included facet to Macbeth as well, having sinister themes of greed, manipulation, and brutality. Macbeth, by the infamous playwright, Shakespeare, presents us with multiple aspects factoring into whether the main character controls his actions that lead to the tragic events.
The word “sleep” is used throughout Macbeth with various connotations. One of the ways to interpret Shakespeare's use of “sleep,” is as a symbol of innocence. In his play, William Shakespeare tells the story of a couple, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, who perform commit wicked and immoral actions in an effort to sate their ambitious desires. Sleepwalking "Since his majesty went into the field, I have seen her rise from her bed, throw her nightgown upon her, unlock her closet, take forth paper, fold it, write upon ’t, read it, afterwards seal it, and again return to bed; yet all this while in a most fast sleep" (5.1.3-7) Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking symbolizes the distress and psychological pain she is in. Since she demands Macbeth to kill innocent people, she becomes restless from guilt. According to Dream Dictionary, sleepwalkers are under a massive amount of stress and lack sleep. Lady Macbeth realizes she cannot escape the consequences of her actions, therefore she holds a lot of stress. Moreover, her eyes which remain open as she sleepwalks symbolize that she may never rest
“Looks like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it”(Shakespeare 1.7) this truly defines Lady Macbeth and describes her being someone that acts one way in certain situations and then in a contrary manner in others and also shows her manipulative personality and exploits her victims. In the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Lady Macbeth is ultimately responsible for Macbeth’s undoing because her ambition supported his greed and provoked his downfall. Lady Macbeth with her demanding and forceful comments triggered Macbeth 's weakness which leads Macbeth to agree on the murder.

Shakespeare had a tendency to use sleep in a figurative manner more often than his use of literal sleep. These examples can all illustrate the way sleep is discussed regarding the timeline of King Duncan’s life; before his death, during his death, and after his death when Macbeth becomes king. In scene 1 of act 2, Lady Macbeth discusses her plans to murder King Duncan.
