Human motivation is a profound mystery, for some, it manifests actions which lead them down a trail of great fortunes, while others fall into a pit of their own despair. Throughout the course of humanity, motivation stays as a morally grey topic, it can allow prosperous growth and development but also brew the greatest evils ever created. Every human is capable of good and evil deeds, they could go down a path which leads them to righteousness, but, also have the possibility of straying and going down the looming, and enthralling road of darkness. In the play, Lady Macbeth harbours this role immensely, she is power-hungry, cruel, and wicked. Her immorality is immense in the beginning of the play. being the catalyst in the murder of King Duncan, all so she and Macbeth could gain the utmost power her ambitions drive her to achieve, no matter how atrocious the actions are to gain it. This is perfectly developed when Lady Macbeth in her infamous monologue states “Unsex me here, and fill me…of direst cruelty!” (Act 1, Scene 5) Lady Macbeth is stating how she wants the spirits to strip her way of her femininity, which is commonly associated with a warm, caring, and motherly nature, and instead make her more masculine which symbolises the cruelty she wholeheartedly craves to have, as she doesn’t want to be seen as weak, and craves to have extreme power over Scotland. Despite the play clearly setting her character as one to despise, she is still a human being not an evil force. Her guilt, and humanity catches up to her later on when she is bedridden with uncontrollable regret, despite wishing for heartlessness and brutality she is faced with empathy, humanising Lady Macbeth's character and once again bringing light to how no one human is just capable of evil or good, we all can embody both conflicting ends of
