Rationale This written task is linked to part 4 and based on the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. In the play, Lady Macbeth is depicted as cold and unfeeling. By having her write to someone she trusts about someone she loves, a more human side of Lady Macbeth is shown. The task consists of one side of a letter-exchange between Lady Macbeth and another person.
Claim: In Shakespeare's "Macbeth," both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth play a pivotal role in the tragic death of King Duncan, it is ultimately Lady Macbeth who bears greater responsibility for his death. Through her manipulation, she ignites Macbeth's ambition, pushing him to commit regicide. Her relentless persuasion and questioning of Macbeth's masculinity plant the seeds of ambition and ruthlessness in his mind, leading him down the path to murder. Even though Macbeth may have carried out the deed, Lady Macbeth's influence and encouragement make her more accountable for the death of King Duncan.
Shakespeare, like any other man in the 16th and 17th century, saw ambitious and dominant women as evil and even disturbing or disturbed. From Macbeth, we can see Shakespeare feels women should be challenged and punished because they are trying to change society. Nowadays these ambitious and dominant women are regarded as brave and respected because of their ambition, such as Lady Macbeth’s ambition to become Queen. Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as mentally disturbed.
Having a gut feeling about something usually means that it's the way to go, the right thing to do. Macbeth had a feeling about killing King Duncan, but fell under pressure and the persuasion of Lady Macbeth. She wanted nothing more than to have Macbeth as king, and she was going to do anything to get what she wanted. Even if her wants caused Macbeth to destroy himself in the process. Macbeth is a tragic hero of hamartia, peripeteia, and hubris.
In Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth the reader is shown how to maintain a relationship and how to destroy it. True love is a hard thing to find, and yet Lady Macbeth and Macbeth found it together. When hard-driving forces came between their love, they were forced to choose between each other and their ambitions. Shakespeare shows how a relationship can turn from something healthy and beautiful to something ugly and toxic through Lady Macbeth’s treatment of her husband. Ambition is a healthy thing to have, but when Lady Macbeth held her hopes above the welfare of her marriage things went wrong.

In their defence they often reference to her small talks with Macbeth, where her opinions often surpass his (1; 7; 72-74). But, it’s clear that Lady Macbeth is no feminist lady. Throughout the play, she is viewed by the audience as a selfish female character, consumed with ambition to successfully bring the witches prophecy of Macbeth becoming king into reality. Unlike, Macbeth who tends to carry out his deeds holily, Lady Macbeths ambition completely disgraces the definition of feminist, believing regicide of faithful leader King Duncan is the way to gain power. Macbeth is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, it is thought to have been performed during the early 1600’s. It demonstrates the harmful physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power. Throughout the play of Macbeth the reader is able to see common phrases that are comparable to those of this generation's music, more specifically act 1 to the song ‘I want it all’ by Queen. Firstly, ‘I want it all’ by Queen relates to Macbeth’s ideas of killing King Duncan in act 1, scenes 3-5, it speaks of wanting all of something and doing whatever it takes to get it no matter what consequences that come from it.

What attributes must a person possess to drive them to such an unnatural act? With this in mind, if a man couldn’t do something a woman can, he was a disgrace; Lady Macbeth is taunting Macbeth with the gender gap, which makes him want to prove he’s more masculine and can keep it together. Even though, Lady Macbeth is viewed as a manipulative character, towards the end, she changes and shows signs of remorse/regret, which is not like her character. Lady Macbeth begins to feel remorseful because she has made an outright killing machine out of Macbeth. Lady Macbeth starts to ask herself “The thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now?
It is human nature to want power, to be at the top of the pyramid, to be king/queen, but that comes at a price as shown in Macbeth. In the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth will do anything to have absolute power and nothing stands in their way. From killing to going completely mad, they will become the next king and queen at all costs. The ambition and the want for power is so high that they kill many, they do whatever they can to be one step closer, and they go completely insane, all because they want that absolute power.
From honored soldier to murderous tyrant, Macbeth killed his way into power. He was informed of his “destiny” and stopped at nothing to achieve it. He had multiple chances to rethink his actions. He didn 't however, he kept on his march to power leaving only himself to blame. Macbeth is the only one to blame for his actions and ultimately, his death.
