In the play Macbeth, a power seeking couple changes for the worse. Lady Macbeth has a definite plan to overthrow the throne, but Macbeth is content to let fate take the course. Unfortunately, this desire warps their relationship and causes both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to transform into completely different individuals. Lady Macbeth transforms from a strong-willed and commanding woman to a fragile, paranoid girl. Moreover, Macbeth goes from a sympathetic, well-respected man to a cold, ruthless, and fearless killer. Duncan's murder and the murder of the Macduff family are two key events in the play Macbeth that highlight Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s personality change.

When Duncan's murder is proposed, Macbeth shows that he is terrified and anxious and does not want to follow this line of action. However, Lady Macbeth convinces him to do so. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is a respectable man, who does not feel the need to kill for the crown. The killing of Ducan leads Macbeth into a deep, dark and long murderous path and eventually his downfall. Macbeth makes the decision to reject all ideals he previously believed in and ultimately loses his mind as the play comes to an end. As a result, he murders every member of the Macduff family. He becomes out of control and disregards everyone and everything showing that Macbeth has become purely wicked. When Macbeth hears the news of his wife's death he says: “She should have died hereafter” (Shakespeare 5. 5. 20). Macbeth believes that his wife's death was inconvenient and that she should have killed herself on a different day. As Macbeth loses empathy for his wife's suffering and death, his personality change is shown, turning him into a man who only feels rage.
