Title In the tragedy, Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, Hamlet sets out to take vengeance upon his uncle Claudius. In the process of vengeance, the woman he loves commits suicide, his family is killed, the kingdom falls to ruin, he pays the price of his own life. Ultimately, Hamlet’s vengeance left to ruin in its wake. In the pursuit of revenge, Hamlet’s mind begins to become clouded, he becomes unable to cope with the feelings that revenge has brought upon him. In effect, he shuns Ophelia, an unnecessary act which leads to the suspension of Polonius the father of Ophelia. However, one can make the argument, that Hamlet needed Laertes in order to portray Hamlet the bigger person, by deliberately creating the illusion that Hamlet fought to the death. Queen Gertrude, is seen an innocent character, who seems to possess no power, in the throne, or pose a threat to Hamlet. However, it can be argued that Hamlet had to he be killed in order to eliminate his power. But what is her power? Perhaps, in order for Hamlet to achieve his desired revenge, he needs to end the throne altogether, and if Claudius is killed and she remarries, will Hamlet be at rest? It can be argued that Hamlet planned the death of his mother to satisfy his vengeance. One important point one can make is that part of Hamlet’s revenge was to also restore the image of his father, by letting Fortinbras take the land that his father had taken. This would have ultimately created Hamlet a legacy of his own.
