Ronald Dahl uses various suspense building techniques in "Lamb to the Slaughter" such as foreshadowing, visual imagery, and dramatic irony. Firstly, foreshadowing in the story helps build suspense. Despite the fact that Mary Maloney, the main character in the story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, murders her husband, her actions can be justified and she should get away with it. First of all, based on Mary's shaken and dazed reaction to what her husband says, it is implied by the author that he wants a divorce even though she is already six months pregnant, which the narrator mentions in the beginning of the story. Although he seems uncomfortable and reluctant to hurt her feelings, it is not a valid enough reason to sympathize with him. Now that I have mentioned Mary being pregnant, let me also mention the fact that she will have to take care of the baby by herself. This puts her in a difficult spot as she is just a housewife, meaning

Always take caution in dangerous times because not everything is what it seems. The person you trust most might be the enemy. In “The Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, Mary Maloney becomes fazed when her husband tells her he is going to leave her and their unborn child behind. Allusion: Allusion refers to when an expression makes an indirect reference to a person, thing, place or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers. Example : "Oh Frankenstein, be not equitable to every other and trample upon me alone, to whom thy justice, and even thy clemency and affection, is most due. Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel." (Frankenstein, pg 94).
Roald Dahl uses literary elements such as irony, suspense, and dark humor to make our learning experience more meaningful. His story Lamb to the Slaughter shows all of these elements. A pregnant woman named Mary Maloney kills her husband with a leg of lamb while in shock after being told her husband is leaving her. Suspense rises when Mary realizes the crime she has committed and worries of being caught. She fakes an alibi and calls the police pretending to come home to find her husband dead.
In The Lamb Slaughter by Roald Dahl, the author implies pretense between a family. First, Patrick, the husband is not true to his marriage and cheats on his wife stating that he will, “give you money and see that you are taken care of”. When the wife hears this, she kills Patrick and lies to not only the police, but also herself that she was not the murderer. In this story, Roald Dahl seems to ironically suggest that you should always be true to yourself and to others or else there will be consequences.

The story “The Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl is of the horror genre for a multitude of reasons. The horror genre itself is in my mind is a story filled with suspense and large expectations. The characters also make this story of the horror genre, as in this story Mary Maloney poses an inside threat to her husband when she attempts, and successfully kills him. The characters in the horror genre do not have to be supernatural. Horror stories may also include paranormal activity, parallel universes, and unnatural explanations.
