For many people, gaining a competitive edge is crucial in one 's success, even if it comes at a cost. In modern professional and amateur sports, the introduction of performance enhancing drugs has dramatically changed the nature of the game. Arthur Caplan, author of A Shot in the Rear: Why Are We Really against Steroids?, presented argumentative reasons from both supporters and objectors of steroid use. While Caplan attempted to use persuasive appeals, the lack of sources used combined with a poor structure severely weakened his argument. In order to enhance his argument, Caplan used persuasive appeals, such as logos and ethos.
Major League Baseball has had a long struggle with keeping steroids out of the sport and making sure players aren’t cheating by enhancing their abilities in the game. The players that have been caught however have mostly all tried to deny the claims one way or another trying to avoid the consequences. This era, called the Steroid Era, started in the 80’s and ran roughly through the late 2000’s with no real defined start or end and PEDS otherwise known as performance enhancing drugs are just as big of a threat to the sport as they always have been. The reason most baseball players use PEDS is to get stronger and faster than normal to help their stats and make them better athletes. Although steroids were banned in 1991, testing for the substances did not start until 2003 which allowed players to freely use steroids without any major repercussions and if they were caught there still was only a minor punishment making steroids easy to use by players.
The Notorious Olympian Marion Jones was a highly decorated American track and field athlete, known for her speed and success in sprinting and jumping events. However, her career took a sharp turn when she became embroiled in a doping scandal involving steroids. In his article, A Tarnished Marion Jones Couldn't Outrun (2007) Author Harvey Araton claims Marion Jones' doping scandal and subsequent downfall serve as a cautionary tale about the perils of cheating in sports. In view of the author's opinionative tone, this article is intended for those who are interested in sports, PEDs, and Olympic scandals, ranging from ages between 16 and 55; these are the people who perceive fairness within sports as a grave issue.
The author furthers his thinking by stating: “Fans should not be let down because their favorite players used steroids to make them watch. They should thank them. Without those players, there might not even be a game to watch” (Villagomez). Villagomez thinks that steroid users in sports are worthy of praise and admiration as without those players, the game would have been far less interesting, and far less popular. Once again, Villagomez is asserting his opinion, providing reasoning for said opinion, to persuade his audience that his opinion is undeniably right and valid.
9.2 (2013): 135-59. Print. This article written by Jack Anderson a Professor of Law at Queen’s University, Belfast, concerns the legal issues that surround the prohibition of doping in sport. The current policy on the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport is underpinned by both a paternalistic desire to protect athletes' health and the long-term integrity
The history of drugs in sport is one of the main impacting factors on its impact within society because it is through the history that many other aspects such as the economy have been impacted. The use of drugs in sport by athletes such as Lance Armstrong throughout the history of high performance sport has meant that with every new method of testing that the world anti-doping agency is coming out with, there are people coming out with ways for their athletes to undetectably dope. This has meant that because athletes have seen other athletes such as Lance Armstrong get away with doping for so many years, they believe that they too can easily get away with in, therefore creating an increase in the use of drug in sport. Between 2012 and 2013 there was a 20% increase in the positive testing to drugs by both Olympic and non-Olympic sport. This is a dramatic increase because of the fact that there was only an increase of 0.8% in the amount of drug testing preformed (14).
Background: Performance-enhancing drugs have been widely used in sports for centuries. My point is that engaging in drugs while participating in sports can be very dangerous. Drug testing should be mandatory for athletes for their safety. The reason for drug testing are; teams depend on their teammates to always be available, drugs can change your athletic abilities, and students join sport teams as a positive activity to avoid getting into trouble and the presence of drugs in sports defeats the goal. I personally know how it feels to be on a team with others who use drugs. They practically “slow-down” the team.

The athletes that actually work hard to be great is more honorable than a cheater. The ones that use steroids build muscle way easier and get “hulk” like strength easier and quicker than the traditional ways. Steroids or PEDs is illegal to use in all sports because if it being
Athletes use of performance enhancing drugs has become all too common in today’s society. With many athletes testing positive for doping, sports are becoming tarnished with athletes trying to gain an unfair advantage on their competitors. Although players are tested often for such drugs, there are still many loopholes and some drugs are not detected by current systems. So what would cause an athlete to put their body at risk to gain just a slight edge on their competitor? Sports should be a test of real skill, not artificial skills given by doctors.

AS91101 - 2.4 Writing Portfolio Piece Two - Cooper Title: Drugs in sports Drugs have become an integral part of any modern day sporting event. Drugs give an unfair advantage to the user and the competitors that are using enhancements are not using their own full abilities to win the Olympic medal or championship. This makes it unfair to other competitors that are not using a drug or other enhancements to compete. Athletes like Lance Armstrong and Nadzeya Ostapchuk not only give sportsmen and women a bad reputation but influence the way the public think about sports and run the risk of addiction and long-term health issues.
But this applies to only those who resort to cheating ways. Sports persons always hit the headlines for a lot of controversies like using drugs, playing for two clubs, abusing the fans of other countries or clubs or inappropriate behaviour in the field or breaking the code of conduct and so on and so forth. The problem does not stop here; the sports medicine which the players take is also causing serious debates and discussion. Issues like faking injury, losing intentionally to get a stronger opponent and failing the gender test had also surfaced in the
