Langston Hughes is an African American novelist, social activist, playwright, and columnist. Hughes was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri where he later grew up to be one of the most famous and prominent poet and novelist during the Harlem Renaissance. Langston Hughes was one of the first people to ever innovate and perfect the then new form of literature called jazz poetry. Hughes has always been the type of writer to produce works that are controversial to the public. As said by the Poetry Foundation, “Hughes’s early work was roundly criticized by many black intellectuals for portraying what they thought to be an early unattractive view of black life.” (Poetry Foundation) Hughes was a great writer and poet but many didn’t like some of …show more content…

Walker was born and raised in Putnam County, Georgia in the city of Eatonton. In her older years after growing up in Georgia, Walker arose to fame in the 1960’s where she was a Civil Rights activist and a social worker. Alice Walker was a very strong figure in literature with her most known piece of work being “the Color Purple” which she won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The book was later turned into a movie which was released to the public in the 1980’s. Walker is known for he intriguing and drama felt works of art and has always produced works of almost the same genre. Biography, a popular website and magazine says, “After more than four decades as a writer, Alice Walker shows no signs of slowing down…” (Biography, Alice Walker) Although she likes to publish works of the same genre she is still very consistent and versatile. Along with being a strong figure of literature Walker is involved with her community. According to her website, AliceWalkerGraden.org, “Continuing her work as a political activist, Walker also wrote about her experiences with the group Women for Women International in 2010's…” (AliceWalkerGarden) Walker is still involved being an activist for women and her community.
