A small boy, with a big dream. Langston Hughes was an African American who became a famous poet, novelist writer, playwright, and columnist. Before becoming a famous writer, Langston Hughes was no different than any other child. He was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin (Missouri). Langston’s parents were Carrie Langston and James Hughes. They separated after his birth and his father moved to Mexico. Most of his childhood time he spent his days in Kansas. His mother was poor, old and didn't have the attention she needed to give to Langston. He felt hurt by both of his parents and didn't know why he couldn't live with either of them. After his mother Carrie was remarried he went to live with her in Lincoln. While going to grammar school there in Lincoln, Langston was elected as a class poet and was inspired to write more and learn more about poetry, short stories, and dramatic plays. He edited newspapers and the yearbooks. His first jazz poetry was, When Sue Wears Red and was interested in writing it during his free time. While graduating High School he was still writing poetry after his graduation. He traveled to Mexico to his father thinking that his father will support his decision and plan of getting into Columbia University. His father wanted him to pursue a career in engineering. After a while, Langston could attend Columbia University as an engineering student. Later on, he became a crewman aboard the S.S Malone in 1923. He traveled around the word to Europe, West Africa and later went to stay in Paris. In his early 1920s in England, he was part of a black expatriate community. Langston also published books and
