As America moved into the early twentieth century, the Harlem Renaissance emerged, and with it came African American music forms such as jazz, blues, spirituals, and ragtime. Langston Hughes’ “The Weary Blues” gives a sample of this blues music, ‘”I got the Weary Blues/ And I can’t be satisfied./ Got the Weary Blue/ And Can’t be satisfied-/ I ain’t happy no mo’/ And I wish I had died”’ (Hughes 1624) The lyrics follow the traditional blues style of repetition and shows the emotion of the singer. The poem also shows the style of the blues music of the time in its use of instruments. The poem says, “He made that poor piano moan,” and, “He played a few chords” (Hughes 1624).
