In Langston Hughes poems "To You", "Dream Deferred" and "April Rain Song" Readers notice that in most of his poems he talks about his life experiences. By using figurative language, he can express all of his thoughts. He uses symbol, simile and personification to help bring his experience to life for the reader.

In the poem "To You" Langston Hughes utilize, symbol. A symbol which stands for something more than what it actually is. Hughes demonstrate symbol in lines 5 and 6 "To dream of vast horizons of the soul- through dreams made whole." In this case, Hughes is initiated that the people to understand that without dedication your actions won't lead to nothing. "Dreamers", "Problem world" and "Whole" are all words that Hughes uses in "To You". To explain that the world needs "Dreamers" to stop this "Problem world" but that can only happen if the "Dreamers" come together to make a "whole" which symbolizes strength and hope.

Hughes is also able to help the reader understand his life experience through simile. A simile compared two unlike things using "like" or "as". Langston Hughes uses this ability in the poem "Dream Deferred" in lines 1-3 "what happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up- like a raisin in the sun?" Personification gives human characteristics to nonhuman things. In "April Rain Song" Hughes uses personification throughout the poem. "Let the rain kiss you." --"Let the rain sing you a lullaby." (Lines 1 and 3) Generally, kisses are wet and usually small pecks on the face, when the speaker creates the line "Let the rain kiss you" it expresses how kisses feel.
