The idea of avoiding the pursuit of one’s desires in order to fulfill them is certainly counterintuitive. Ultimately, there is certainly evidence to support the notion that going with the flow to some extent and not overthinking every detail of whatever one intends to accomplish would aid in the eventually attainment of the goal. However, the extent to which Lao Tzu suggests we should “let go”, at least when considered literally, seems almost ludicrous. “[T]he Master says: … I let go of the law, and people become honest. … I let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.” I do not think that Lao Tzu was an anarchist, despite what the quote seems to indicate.
