The Larceny of Campbell’s Chemical On Thursday, September 14th, 2015, at approximately 3:53pm, Miss Zee was found unconscious on the chemical storage room floor by one of ACCI’s caretaking staff. She was discovered on top of an unknown chemical substance. Once Miss Zee recovered, she explained that she slipped on the unknown substance chasing after someone carrying a jar of the substance, spilling it on the way out. The investigators collected the chemical substance from the storage room as evidence of the crime. The police detectives have closed down their search to four suspects, all teachers who remained at school after 3:00pm on the day of the incident. Mars, Mr. Sambell, and Mr. Coin were found with sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, sodium nitrate, and sodium thiosulfate respectively. After obtaining small samples of the four solids from the teachers, the physical and chemical properties of the four substances were observed carefully. The colour and odour of the substances were quite similar. But the big differences were found in the solubility and behaviour in acid. After having recorded the observations in a table, a sample of the substance found under Miss Zee was studied. The properties of the substance was observed with the same properties as the previous tests. The clarity and behaviour in acid revealed the identity. The substance in particular changed colour with the addition of acid and was cloudy in clarity. It matched the properties of sodium thiosulfate. Sodium thiosulfate, also spelled sodium thiosulphate, is a chemical often used as an antidote to cyanide poisoning or as a dechlorinator, which explained why Mr. Coin the swim team coach had some in his
