The case I chose to analyze was the Larry Nassar case. I decided to research this story because many women were greatly affected emotionally and physically at the hand of Nassar. If you are not familiar with the trial, Larry Nassar was a doctor for the United States of America Gymnastics team who abused and sexually assaulted his patients between 1995 to 2015. This case is being referred to as one of the worst sexual abuse scandals in the history of sports. Nassar was finally arrested in July of 2017 and was sentenced 60 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to having possession of child pornography. Nassar was also sentenced 40-175 years to prison in the state of Michigan also, for pleading guilty to sexually assaulting minors. Claims have been made that Nassar was in possession of over 37,000 images and also a video of himself molesting a minor. The New York Times claims Nassar sexually assaulted more than 160 females during the twenty year time span. The New York Times definitely gives more coverage and went into more detail than The Washington Post. Many girls spoke out about how Nassar traumatized them. I would say I took more information from this article because of how much more information they were able to provide. In 2016, gymnast McKayla Maroney was paid 1.25 million to remain silent after making accusations of sexual abuse by Larry Nassar. It’s been said he was able to get away with it for so long because he had a “celebrity like” status in the gymnastics world. After seeing these girls give their story, it really impacted me personally, it makes this story more relatable on a personal level as I am also a teenage girl.
