Larry Nassar Sexual Abuse Case: News Source Evaluation For my News Source Evaluation, I chose a topic that I felt everyone would be interested in. Recently, Dr. Larry Nassar, who has worked with the USA gymnastics team, and numerous colleges, including Michigan State, was sentenced to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing over 160 of his female patients, all of which testified against him. To evaluate my news sources I used The New York Times, Youtube, Democracy Now, and Michigan State News. I have found that each news source focuses more on the victims than anything. The majority of the information from this topic was regarding the resignation of the MSU president and the members of the board. Authors Mitch Smith and Anemona Hartocollis main focus were the repercussions involved including the money that MSU will be giving to the victims families and how U.S.A will be affected by this crime. This source focuses on the court case itself, what Nassar had to say, and what other people said to him. The article goes in depth about his sentencing and how long the case lasted and how long he will be imprisoned for. In my opinion, this is not the best news source because the person reading hadn’t heard before about this case, I believe this source wouldn’t give the proper amount of information to educate the reader on this topic. What I’ve learned from reading these sources is that overall, popular and dependable news source such as CNN and the New York Times seem to be able to provide more information about topics than news sources such as Democracy Now and Michigan State News. I think this is because the more popular news sources know that they have to provide more information for them to be considered dependable. The smaller news sources know that not everyone will go straight to their websites and therefore they don’t have as much information given to them in the first place because of
