Non-Pharmacological treatments for a disease are referring to treatments that do not involve the use of drugs. In the case of open and closed angle glaucoma, there are quite a few options for non-pharmacological treatment. Treatments for open angle glaucoma include various surgical procedures and laser therapy. Laser trabeculoplasty is the first option. It is a form of laser therapy. There are two types of laser trabeculoplasty: Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT), Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). Selective laser trabeculoplasty uses a lower power laser than Argon laser trabeculoplasty does. The procedure is completed in your doctor’s office. The doctor uses a laser beam to open blocked or clogged channels in your trabecular meshwork. This makes it easier for fluid to flow out of the front part of the eye, decreasing pressure in the eye. It is called a Tube-shunt surgery. A flexible plastic tube is placed in the eye with an attached silicone drainage pouch to help drain aqueous humor from the eye. Last is Electrocautery, which is a minimally invasive surgery where a Trabectome (a handheld instrument) uses “microelectrocautery to ablate a strip of tissue from the trabecular meshwork and Schlemm's canal, allowing the aqueous direct access to the eye's drainage system.”
