It’s was a long industrious day, and you see an old dusty book to your right. You scoff in disgust, “ugh! Why bother! Books are only going to waste my time especially science fiction books, they are meant only for the geeks”. But what if I told you that book that you just passed by without a second thought, neglecting it for days possibly weeks had secrets that you could discover. Underneath all those grimy pages and yearlong chapters, there are secrets that could modify your city, state, country, possibly even the world. In the story “Last Dog”, advanced technology caused people cause themselves to seclude themselves inside a dome from a planet that former human generations have inhabited. They forgot the beauty that planet Earth has given to them, they think of Earth as an intoxicated place, a place they are damned to live on. They’re brainwashed by the futuristic technology inside the dome that they forget what it feels like to be outside the dome. “People used to go out, but the outside environment was threatening ……. Used it now” ( Paterson 50). This shows that people were too afraid to take risks because of what happened in the past. Additionally, in the story The Pedestrian,“‘Hello in there,’ he whispered to every house on every side as he moved. ‘What’s up tonight on Channel 4, Channel 7, Channel 9? Where are the cowboys rushing, and do I see the United States Calvary over the next hill to the rescue?’”( Venable 2). This is significant because Leonard Meed, the man who is walking outside at night is being sarcastic, despising how everybody is too busy watching tv and not going outside for walks and spending quality family time face to face and not through a device that we take for granted.
