Jesus Cried
Jesus cried on at least three different occasions. John recorded the events that surrounded the death of Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha. Word came to Jesus that Lazarus was sick; however, before the Lord reached Bethany His friend had died. Although, Jesus knew that Lazarus would be all right, when He saw the grief and confusion that filled the hearts of Lazarus’ family, he cried tears of sympathy. John wrote simply that “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35)
Then, Jesus shed tears deep in the garden of Gethsemane. After Jesus ate the Passover meal with His disciples and instituted the memorial that is observed in His memory, Luke described Jesus’ private moments in the garden. (Luke 22:44) Neither Luke nor any of the other gospel writers recorded that Jesus cried on this occasion; however, the Hebrew writer did. “Who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear.” (Hebrews 5:7) This verse suggests that Jesus shed tears of anguish as He anticipated Calvary, knowing what was ahead of Him. …show more content…

“Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it.” (Luke 19:41) The word “wept” there means that He broke down and sobbed uncontrollable tears. He was looking into the future and saw on the horizon, what others could not see, and He wept over the spiritual condition of Jerusalem. Perhaps, for the same reason, He weeps over us today. Jesus wept because the people were caught up in an outward show of meaningless religious acts. They had a form of godliness, but they had denied the power thereof; making it a counterfeit religion.
