Upon my family’s sudden move to Annandale in the summer before 5th grade, I was totally lost. No longer could I turn to my best friend of five years, I had to start all over and begin a process that I dreaded with every fiber in my being: making new friends. At age 10, I was shockingly awkward and shy, and felt intimidated at the prospect of moving to a new school filled with people I didn’t know. Throughout the whole of fifth grade, I made one friend, and it took me quite a long time to grow accustomed to the school itself. I am the most experienced member of my team, having done the club for three years in a row, so newer teammates often rely on me to guide them through the research and writing process as well as calm their nerves when we have to present our paper to a committee of 40+ people. Outside of school, I work as a teaching assistant at the Kumon Learning Center in Lebanon, where I sometimes have to keep almost twenty elementary school students focused on math and reading worksheets. Just as well, I would absolutely be willing to help incoming freshman with issues like choosing courses or finding their way around the school, as I remember having those very same problems just a few short years ago. I have done a fair amount of research into the college application process as well, so any upperclassmen worried about anything related to that would find me a fairly valuable source of firsthand knowledge. For transfer students, I imagine that my abilities to help them would mainly be focused on showing them around and helping them grow accustomed to the school.
