Power and leadership are two terms often connected but not totally the same. While some leaders have power, not all powerful people are great leaders. Leadership is having the power to influence people to follow you, so essentially anyone who has influence can be considered a leader. - the primary characteristics of a great leader is someone who takes the power and better themselves. In The Crucible Abigail completely exploits the power she has over Proctor and the two use it for her benefit (Miller). When Abigail uses her influence and outright control of the girls to totally destroy the town of Salem all to get back at Proctor, she plays on the fact that most of the public figures in the town have no choice but to believe her. Thus, the beginning of the downfall of Salem is a perfect example of the dangers of unchecked authority. Hale also greatly contributed to the destruction of Salem; he had the power to determine whether or not someone was a witch.(Miller). Another death caused by the dreadful leadership in Salem is the death of John Proctor (Miller ) . Proctor makes the decision to also receive his own integrity rather than following what the people in power want him to do. Nelson Mandela took the South African national rugby to black townships to have them play with the young kids living there. (Invictus) The fact that Mandela was able to bring a sense of joy and inclusion to a part of the country who had nothing but resentment for the white population shows how good leadership can really unify a society. Another example of how Mendals great leadership further united the country was the moment at the world cup where the entire stadium sang the new national anthem which most of the white population was very against. (Invictus) By being his most caring and sociable self Mendela led a country to put aside systematic issues
